Messi had earlier put Argentina ahead with a sublime strike in the 14th minute, but Ahmed Musa equalised for Nigeria just two minutes later.

Nigeria piled on the pressure in the second half, but they were unable to find an equaliser as Messi's class shone through in the end.

It was not a vintage performance from Argentina, but they will be relieved to have got past Nigeria and into the last eight.

Messi now has five goals in this year's tournament, making him joint top scorer alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and he will be confident of leading his country all the way to World Cup glory.

France Tops Uruguay to Reach Semi-Finals of World Cup Keno

France advanced to the semi-finals of the World Cup on Friday, edging Uruguay 2-1 with a goal in each half from Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann.

Uruguay, which finished as runner-up in 2010 and reached the semifinals for the first time in 68 years, took an early lead when defender Diego Godin headed home a free kick in the 10th minute. But France equalized through Varane's header off a corner in the 40th and then went ahead when Griezmann scored his fourth goal of the tournament from the penalty spot in the 61st after Lucas Hernandez was brought down inside the area.
